Perform(her)

Perform (her) hosts the Erasmus+ project “Teaser Video: short preview videos of theater performances and the performing arts” in Galatina.

From 18 to 22 July the historic center of Galatina will be a crossroads for international artists, scholars, curators and researchers, to give body and soul to PERFORM (HER) an ambitious cultural project, which will combine in a transversal and open way fields of study and generations, with a polyphonic, inclusive and horizontal approach, curated and conceived by “Domus Artist Residency”, international residence for contemporary art and research, founded by ‘artist Romina De Novellis.

The project is sponsored by the Municipality of Galatina and supported byLes Amis de Domus, Level Project, Apulia Film Commission, Paris Saint Denis – Périferiées 2028 Association de préfiguration Capitale Européenne de la Culture, Associazione Tuttoteatro.com and Atelier Essenza for the “Teaser” project funded by Erasmus +.

Domus is above all a historic residence full of energy and family stories, a place of research and hospitality open all year round to international art, dedicated to the Mediterranean and characterized by a transversal, inclusive and eco-feminist approach.

A HOME FOR ARTISTS, STUDIOS AND CITIZENS

With Perform (her) and the scheduled annual activities, Domus manages to welcome in Galatina an international community of artists, curators, scholars in various fields, young emerging art and historical artists in inclusive and transversal dialogue. As in the case of personalities of the caliber of ORLAN, who happily embraced this project so radically in the wake of his own artistic and political research. ORLAN’s work, since the 1960s, questions social phenomena, challenging established codes, always combined with humor, sometimes with parody or even with the grotesque. The French artist, for the first time in Salento uses sculpture, photography, performance, video, 3D, video games, augmented reality, artificial intelligence and robotics (she has created a robot in her image and likeness that talks to her) and also medical techniques such as surgery and biotechnology to question the social phenomena of our time. In this fourth edition, the scientific committee and co-curator of the project, together with the Domus team, is made up of Fabienne Brugère professor of philosophy at the University Paris 8 Vincennes – Saint Denis; Ilaria Conti independent curator based in New York; Guillaume Le Blanc philosopher and professor of social and political philosophy at the Paris Diderot University; Paola Ugolini art critic, curator of In between Art Film and visiting professor, IUAV Venice.

PUBLIC MEETINGSVIDEO INSTALLATIONS AND URBAN PERFORMANCES

It begins with three days of meetings and dialogues, (18, 19 and 20 July), at the Domus Artist Residency headquarters. Guests from the local, national and international panorama of the world of universities and art will alternate in a dialogue open to the community and to the many enthusiasts, on the themes of PERFORM (HER). Guest artists: Alice Anderson, Rada Akbar, Giulia Crispiani, Sophie Dupont, Silvia Giambrone, Claudia Mollese, Sergio Racanati, Alessia Rollo, Raffaella Naldi Rossano, Rossella Piccinno. Scholars in dialogue: Maria Alicata (art historian), Marta Federici (art historian and independent curator), Massimiliano Mollona (anthropologist, director and writer), Mara Montanaro (Philosopher and associate researcher, LEGS Gender and sexuality studies laboratory, University Paris 8); Roberto Poma / Philosopher, Paris Est Créteil University, Chiara Vecchiarelli (art critic researcher curator), David Zerbib (art critic philosopher).

On 21 and 22 July the historic center of Galatina will be involved in two days of public events open and collective refunds. The use of the public space in the historic center as a place of encounter and community resistance is an essential component of the project. Video installations are scheduled at the Cloister of Santa Chiara and the Domus headquarters and a collective and choral action with the participation of all the invited guests in the residence, at the historic and energetic Piazza Santi Pietro e Paolo. Thursday 21 July at the Domus and in the Cloister of Santa Chiara also the bearer of a feminine story, will host from 9 pm an evening dedicated to loop projections by the artists and guests of the 2022 edition. A fundamental moment to accompany the word to the image, in the process of analysis and study of the performing arts. The week of work will end on Friday 22 July, from 9 pm, with an evening dedicated to live performances through the physical occupation of St. Peter’s Square by the artists in residence. An emblematic place, a public stage for the suffering of tarantate women, which, once again, becomes a contemporary space of body reappropriation, allowing us to rethink the way we look at others, the same way that determines discrimination.

The “party” of PERFORM (HER), on July 23, in the spaces of the Level Project among the local partners of the project, will close the summer activities of Domus with a flourish.
